Where my fellow Good Girl, intelligent, sensitives at?

It’s not that we never cared about these things. It’s just that some of us got so GOOD at protecting our peace, being regulated, and hyper-focusing on feeling better that we got smaller and smaller:

We said no to the social events, stopped eating our favourite foods, cut connection with other humans, started fearing our natural intensity, and stopped challenging ourselves. And so our eyes got hyper vigilant, our butt holes clenched, our pelvic floor got rigid, and we were barely breathing in case we upset the perfect balancing act of systems, ‘work life balance’, and stability in place.

We held on so tightly to these things that we stopped trusting anything else, started believing that we’re fragile and that life had to be okay for us to be okay, and lost connection with our power.

It was never lack of control, lack of peace, or sympathetic energy that were the problem. It was our lack of ability to ALLOW them.

Once we have a baseline ability to regulate and have reminded our system that it can take care of that by itself, there’s so much that matters more.

Especially for us high achieving, eldest child, intelligent, highly sensitive Good Girls…

At some point, feeling better comes from letting go of the rules, structures, systems, and striving to get it all right and surrendering to the inherent unstructured, uncertain, high sensation, messy chaos of life.

As a high achieving, eldest child, intelligent, highly sensitive Good Girl myself, it’s something I’m still always having to relearn. I noticed myself just yesterday holding onto a system I’d built around myself because I have TOO much knowledge and what I actually needed to do was forget what I know and let my intuition lead instead.

Ultimately, it was never having more rules, more control, more resistance to life, or more vigilence over myself that healed my eating disoder, chronic pain, anxiety, or chronic fatigue, and it’s certainly not how I’m unfolding the wisdom in Crohn’s Disease.

In fact, every one of these was a direct call to LESS control, fewer rules, less constriction, and allowing more life and more of myself to move through me.

1. your diagnosis isn’t the root cause
A diagnosis is a label for a collection of symptoms, not the origin of them. Stop your inquiry at the diagnosis + you stay at the symptom level, the *expression*. But *what* is being expressed?

2. NS dysregulation isn’t the root cause
why is your nervous system dysregulated? When you attend to this actual root rather than always managing the symptom of ‘NS dysregulation’ you’ll have far more capacity for present moment external stressors + find that your NS is actually inherently self-regulating

3. If you hold the identity of being on a healing journey, you’ll always be on a healing journey
Identify as ‘someone who is healing’ + you unconsciously maintain that in-process state to stay congruent with your self-concept + the part of you who needs to be ‘healing’ to feel worthy, seen, heard, pure, and/or in control + managed will always find another wound to fix

4. You’re trying to heal in the same way you were wounded
If your healing journey is fuelled by self criticism, getting it ‘right’ + avoiding discomfort, etc. it’s being led by your conditioning; the verison of you you had to play to feel safety, dignity, and belonging. +as long as that part of you is still having to manage you, you’re not healing

5. If you’re gaining something by having your condition, you’ll always have it
bc it’s meeting a need nothing else is meeting yet. Until your body feels safe + connected without it, it’ll unconsciously maintain the patterns that provide these secondary gains, even if you consciously want to heal

6. there is no ‘healed’
’healed’ isn’t a final destination you can reach + suddenly everything is perfect. you absoultely can heal (integrate) individual diseases + conditions but the idea of ‘being healed’ keeps you striving, monitoring, and postponing your life

7. You don’t have your condition bc it’s keeping you safe
we realise our condition isn’t random + conclude it’s there to keep us safe from being seen, judged, hurt, rejected etc. + there’s a level where it probably is. But safety can’t be the root because life is inherently *unsafe*. requiring that life be something it’s not keeps us fragile + in the role of the victim

Your nervous system is a continuous, adaptive process, not a switch.

2. a dysregulated nervous system isn’t the root cause of anything.
It’s a symptom. The root is in the answer to: why is your NS dysregulated in the first place?

3. regulation isn’t the same thing as capacity.
To be regulated is to be within your window of tolerance. Capacity is the *size* of your window of tolerance. Being able to regulate is a first step towards increasing your window but it’s not the same thing.

4. your nervous system doesn’t need healing.
It’s responding entirely appropriately to your internal and external environment and your present and past traumas and stressors. your NS system doesn’t need healing, what it’s responding to probably does.

5. over intellectualising nervous system regulation is keeping you dysregulated.
Do you really need to read that fifth book on polyvagal theory 👀 (especially if you have a competent coach or therapist, leave it to them). your NS will do its job whether you understand the theory of it or not. knowledge is power until you have too much of it without application… then it just creates hyper focus, fear, and overstimulation, and keeps you in your head while pretending you’re doing the work

6. your nervous system’s job isn’t to protect you from life, it’s to help you participate in it.
overprioritising safety erodes your agency, capacity, freedom, and engagement with other people and with life.

7. constantly seeking down-regulation is keeping you frozen, inert, and passive.
where’s your life force?! this fear of being activated has us on a path to becoming a dorsal nation. when sympathetic activation is repeatedly suppressed instead of metabolised it doesn’t just go away, it stalls, and so do you. you don’t become regulated by calming energy that was meant to move, you become stuck.

This doesn’t mean we just leave it all alone and carry on, ofc.

But T he innate, intelligent, supremely WISE ability of your system to self regulate comes from restoring coherence within YOU not by controlling reality and managing specific routines, practices, and tools. Not that those things can’t support you on the way there.

At some point you have to step in and honestly ask yourself if you’re actually regulating or are you compartmentalising and playing out an identity.

Once you know how to regulate and you have coherence in your internal environment really all you need to do is surrender control back over to your body to get back on with its job while you work on trusting it to do that.

This doesn’t mean we just leave it all alone and carry on, ofc.

humans are wired to co-regulate. we need community to thrive, and we have a collective duty to take care of one another in the best ways that we’re able to.

but there are limitations to how we can do that and how we can meet one another’s needs and interpretations of what ‘safe’ even means.

others can offer safety cues: tone of voice, facial expression, honesty, and presence, but your system must have the capacity to register those cues as safe. if it can’t, you won’t fully relax into even the safest community.

‘Safety’ seems to be another pendulum swing we’re in after lifetimes of not feeling safe and not being physically safe and we’re now, understandably, overcompensating.

We are electrical beings!

When I completely ran out of power back in 2016, the first thing I knew to do was to connect more with nature to help charge myself back up.

I don’t have chronic fatigue syndrome anymore, but I still bring a little bit of nature to me to help fill in the gaps where I’m not always in it by:

Filtering our drinking water
Wearing blue light blockers after about 8pm
Eating organic where possible
Wearing shoes as little as possible
Getting sunlight into my eyes and a tan on my skin
Using an infrared light
Sleeping on a grounding sheet

You can regulate all day but if the deeper misalignment remains underneath, your system will keep sounding the alarm. Instead of managing the alarm, you can drop a layer deeper and listen to what (who) it is that’s sounding the alarm.

Spoiler: it’s YOU!

Of course we find the world unsafe and dysregulating if we’re meeting it as our unintegrated inner children and with a subconscious lens of beliefs and values that don’t fit us anymore.

I never managed my anxiety, or talked about it, or had a protocol or toolbox for it.

And it healed anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was lucky that in the period I had (what I can now see was) high functioning anxiety from around 2006-2014, we didn’t have social media to self identify and diagnose in the way we do now. I don’t think I even knew what anxiety was, I didn’t know that the suffocating frustration of being always in my own way, being stuck in the nagging, incessant looping of my own mind, the stifling overwhelm, and being constantly on alert waiting for the other shoe to drop was ‘anxiety’, so I didn’t have a label for it, didn’t seek healing for it, and therefore never identified with it.

So it didn’t heal through management and regulation because I didn’t know what those things were — although for sure, it would have been helpful in specific present moments to have a toolkit to support me.

It healed because I went underneath it to the root.

On my quest to heal chronic pain, I inadvertently ended up unearthing the root of anxiety, getting to know it, expressing its energy, and integrating it into something bigger. It was profoundly UNregulated, messy, and non linear. And it definitely could never have been met, understood, or alchemised with a ‘toolkit’.

And now, aside from the natural anxiety we all have by virtue of the fact that we’re thinking and feeling aware and conscious humans, inexplicably existing on a gigantic planet spinning through infinite space, and we’re going to die and don’t know when — I have zero anxiety. And being free from anxiety doesn’t rely on me doing a practice or protocol every day.

I retrofitted the process I went through to transmute my anxiety and have since taken dozens of 1-1 clients through it, and now I’m taking you through the entire process (with non of the faffing about and cul de sacs I wandered into on my own journey) in my upcoming self paced mini course. I’m frenziedly catching it all now BTS as it’s dropping in and turning into something you can easily follow and apply.

These are 3 things I actually did do that eventually, combined with some other things, led to me healing high functioning anxiety, and it never came back.

1. I’d start saying what I mean. No ‘yes’ when I mean ‘no’, no ‘it’s fine’ when it isn’t. Even if I only acknowledge it to myself first.

2. I’d stop letting my misunderstood/unseen/shamed/scared/abandoned inner child lead my adult life and instead start showing up as the adult I am (by reparenting my inner child. Not indulging them, reparenting them)

3. I’d pause from fighting and trying to change any of it and practice *allowing* it to be there.

And bonus: I’d decide I could be with and expand my capacity for the inescapable discomfort of choosing to reshape myself around all of the above.

1. I’d start saying what I mean. No ‘yes’ when I mean ‘no’, no ‘it’s fine’ when it isn’t. Even if I only acknowledge it to myself first.

2. I’d stop letting my misunderstood/unseen/shamed/scared/abandoned inner child lead my adult life and instead start showing up as the adult I am (by reparenting my inner child. Not indulging them, reparenting them)

3. I’d pause from fighting and trying to change any of it and practice *allowing* it to be there.

And bonus: I’d decide I could be with and expand my capacity for the inescapable discomfort of choosing to reshape myself around all of the above.

Yes, present-moment things we can’t control in our external environment are constantly dysregulating us:

Politics, the economy, war and g*noc*de, various narcissistic exes, family, parenting, trying to book an appointment with your GP - the list goes on.

AND it’s also true that while there will always be stressful things going on that we can’t control, a huge part of our RESPONSE to those circumstances (aside from systemic socioeconomic issues that we shouldn’t have to ‘put up with’), and whether or not we personally find them chronically dysregulating or not, lies in:

Our unique perception of the world
Our belief systems
Our unprocessed life experiences and historical stress responses
Our emotional-psycho-spiritual inner landscape

Aka — our subconscious.

And this is the part that not many take into account when it comes to nervous system regulation. But it’s the part that’s running 99% of our show and 99% of our stress responses.

But instead of looking there, we simply show up to our morning routine every day to keep the subconscious nice and still and contained.

Do the butterfly hugs when we feel it rousing with emotion.

And practice 4-7-8 breathing any time it shows signs of wanting to be expressed through a trigger.

At some point, the once necessary step in the healing journey becomes a prolonged manifestation of the control/suppression pattern that’s much easier to overlook because it can be labelled ‘wellness’ or ‘healing’.

Being able to regulate is a necessary and important skill that everyone should have access to, but if that’s all you’re doing at the expense of what might be driving the dysregulation underneath… it’s like sticking a plaster over a cut for the rest of your life.

You might need a plaster for a bit to help the healing process but at some point you have to take off the protection and give it some air.

When it knows that you can move quickly and efficiently without pain, that you have range in your heart rate, can look behind you, can get up and down from the floor, push away and pull towards, balance, and that you can stand up tall and straight and look to the horizon…

Then it can REST into that safety.

Our touch and movement receptors developed before any other sensory pathway — it’s our most primary channel for detecting whether or not we’re physically safe. So that is what our nervous system cares about before it’s concerned with how we identify, or if our inner child is validated, or what our love language is.

Knowing this ^ can make emotional processing and release much less vague and much more tangible.

This isn’t the same as catharsis — which is a big expression and discharge of energy. Hitting a pillow and screaming can feel good and be useful in the moment but can bypass subtler layers of processing and integration, can be dysregulating for the nervous system and can reinforce loops of emotional reactivity. It can be the difference between venting and healing. Although I find it can be helpful as a way to break down patterns of shame and embarrassment in how we need to move and express.

This is also why journaling on our emotions rarely revolves anything and just keeps us in a loop of more and more elaborately having to write about how we feel. It’s just a first step.

It’s a process, that must take integration, safety, presence, and meaning into account and needs to connect the feeling with the action cognitively.

The first time I healed chronic pain, I did it by regulating my nervous system.

I’d had debilitating period pain—the kind where you can’t stand up, that makes you throw up and pass out, and that feels like you’ll have a heart attack from the intensity of it—every month (& often mid-cycle) since I was 11.

That first month without pain felt miraculous.

Which, of course, it wasn’t.

It was the culmination (or so I thought) of years & years worth of ‘healing’.

Nervous system regulation is what got rid of the pain...

And it’s also why, 1 year later, it came back.

Because I’d ended up wandering down a cul-de-sac of having to be regulated to not be in pain...

It wasn’t sustainable.

Life isn’t regulated.

And so to maintain regulation and avoid flaring, I was having to make my life smaller and smaller to stay within this indefinable ‘safe’ zone in which I could be pain-free.

And it was exhausting. It felt like a fight.

How could that be healing if I was always looking over my shoulder for the next thing to come along and dysregulate me?

I’d gone from being trapped in pain to being trapped in regulation.

And what I quickly realised is that I had to finally, properly get intimate with what was going on underneath the regulation if I wanted to not only be pain free but… free.

Why was I dysregulated in the first place?

And while the ‘root cause’ of anything is rarely singlular but a ‘perfect storm’ of compounding factors, the answer to that question always comes down to a fundamental disconnect from the self.

And that self does NOT want to be regulated!

THAT is how I finally healed the pain for good. And it wasn’t regulated. It was scary and messy and ugly and confronting.

Being able to regulate your nervous system is an essential skill that serves us well in managing and navigating life.

But please don’t be regulating yourself away from the part of you that’s underneath, waiting for you to get your head under and go get them.

That knot in your chest has been labelled as ‘anxiety’ but what it actually is is the unexpressed somatic charge of the good girl who found safety in self-erasure, control in reading the room instead of feeling yourself, and validation from being small, smart, and conforming.

So as an adult, being ‘regulated’ has become another way to micromanage yourself — to stay in the familiarity of smallness and containment, repress yourself under yet another performance (this time it’s called “healing’,) a way to follow the rules and get an A for doing so, of being the quiet good one, and of being able to cope.

And that same over regulated nervous system is tired of holding it all together and holding down that charge and it’s letting you know through ‘anxiety’.

For those of us raised in a culture that shaped us around perfection, performance, ‘niceness’, and shrinking into our bodies, anxiety is the resulting energy left over from everything that wasn’t those things. It’s US!

Not in the ‘you’ll always have anxiety so you should accept it’ way but in the ‘that’s the sensation of the PART of you that didn’t get to be expressed, the shamed parts that weren’t allowed and it’s making sure it doesn’t get forgotten’: The bigness you had to contain, the noise you had to close your mouth around, the tantrum you were rewarded out of, the one who walked on eggshells, and the push back that wasn’t allowed.

Which is why nervous system regulation, talk therapy, and MORE control never heals your anxiety.

Safety is a *piece*. And if you hold on too much to everything needing to be safe, you forget that your soul doesn’t GAF about your safety.

It wants you to risk safety for something bigger, deeper, more life affirming. It wants you as a steward of rich, uncomfortable, wild, free, passionate LIFE. And it knows that ultimately, the safety that we’re staying still for, is an illusion. What does it actually mean to be safe?

At the conflict between the two, anxiety blooms. When your soul is urging towards the unknown, the risk, and the expansion, and your nervous system is trying to hold you in what you already know, is where that feeling of being always in your own way, second guessing everything, and feeling like you’ll fall apart manifests.

If you’ve mastered regulation and are wondering why nothing’s changing, it’s because you’ve also regulated your soul.

Safety is a *piece*. And if you hold on too much to everything needing to be safe, you forget that your soul doesn’t GAF about your safety.

It wants you to risk safety for something bigger, deeper, more life affirming. It wants you as a steward of rich, uncomfortable, wild, free, passionate LIFE. And it knows that ultimately, the safety that we’re staying still for, is an illusion. What does it actually mean to be safe?

At the conflict between the two, anxiety blooms. When your soul is urging towards the unknown, the risk, and the expansion, and your nervous system is trying to hold you in what you already know, is where that feeling of being always in your own way, second guessing everything, and feeling like you’ll fall apart manifests.

If you’ve mastered regulation and are wondering why nothing’s changing, it’s because you’ve also regulated your soul.

I’m not trying to discredit this creator, she’s sharing an important message on how slowing down is an important counter to chronic stress.

Not rushing when you don’t have to is a good short term strategy for when there are stressors you have to deal with that you can’t control .
We DO generally need to slow down from 24/7 speed and being okay with being late from time to time is also healthy.

But we don’t want that to be driven by a (misplaced) fear of cortisol, adrenaline, stress, and our sympathetic state. And we can’t live in an idyl where we *never* rush. Our sympathetic state is NOT just our fight or flight, and being slow does NOT automatically mean you’re regulated either. Rushing to meet a friend for coffee or to get your train or to meet a deadline doesn’t have to contribute to chronic stress, it’s what our nervous system is designed to do. Mobilise, be stressed, and then reregulate.

And if we keep striving for perpetual calm in an attempt to not be stressed, we’ll all end up with no response-ability, little capacity, fragile, and not functioning in relationship and with the world.

And finally, perception is everything when it comes to stress. If you believe that rushing will automatically put you into a survival state and shut down parts of your brain, it will. If you believe that rushing is just rushing… it won’t.

7. down regulate or die
Up regulation is essential too! Gotta be able to move, mobilise, express, take risks, and be uncomfortable.

8. calm is good and stress is bad
calm CAN be good unless you have no capacity for anything that’s not calm. Stress CAN be bad if it’s chronic. Eustress (positive stress) is absolutely essential for any biological organism to grow — that’s YOU!

9. Regulation = feeling what you can tolerate.

Tools can be great and necessary. And they can be an elaborate distraction from something more honest, and often something more simple.

Sometimes you might need tools like the ones in the first set to create the capacity to do practices like the ones in the second set. But the second ones aren’t even practices, really, they’re STANDARDS.

But you get the idea, right?

Our nervous system is about more than fight or flight and regulation is about far more than tools — it requires co-regulation, trust, truth, discomfort, and physiological care. And if you’re not really committed to practices like the new in the second list you’ll be spending a lot more time on the first ones.

If you’re doing butterfly hugs whenever you feel a stirring of discomfort or emotion but are still lying to yourself, gossiping, setting boundaries to avoid facing hard feelings, and holding back from what you really truly want to do in your life then there’s only so much ‘nervous system regulation’ you can achieve.

I know you’ve been told to regulate your nervous system to manage the sensations you feel and don’t know what to do with …

But you’ve been DOING that every morning for how long now? And the weight, the anxiety, the feeling that you’re always in your own way… is still there. You still feel like you’re missing something, and you spin out the second you have to make a decision…

Nervous system regulation tools and spiritual practices are great (for real, I do all of these things too) but this isn’t what they’re for and they’re not getting to the root of why you have a constant weight in your chest, an autoimmune condition, and why you can’t post your face on social media without a downward spiral of overthinking and shame. It just highlights how we are multifaceted, intelligent, adaptable and in more influence and relationship with ourselves and our conditions than we believe.

Anxiety makes more sense than we think it does.

And it makes more sense why your regulation toolbox feels like it’s only ever scratching the surface, right? Because you can’t regulate this depth (especially when you’re using regulation to soothe instead of to centre), it actually needs the opposite: to be met, held, and expressed, not managed, contained, and ignored.

When you realise your 12-step morning routine, ability to recite Polyvagal Theory more articulately than your therapist, and your neatly regulated emotions are just another way for your Good Girl pattern to manifest through control, validation, and getting everything right and that you’ve been using ‘healing’ and ‘regulation’ not to MEET yourself… but to manage yourself into something presentable, right, acceptable, and appeasing…

You’ve gotten a gold star in never rocking the boat, never making a fuss, never ugly crying…

Yet, there’s a perpetual weight in your chest, a knot in your throat, you never feel settled, and the buzz of anxiety won’t go away not matter how many times you box breath and butterfly tap… because this era of healing is another layer of performance.

We need to be able to regulate ourselves. It’s a fundamental skill and the foundation of somatics (the foundation, not the entire goal). But the energy you’re regulating with and how you’re using regulation tools matter.

Take the definition of ‘regulation’:

‘according to the rules or the usual way of doing things. the rules or systems used to control an activity or process or the action of controlling the activity or process. use of rules, incentives and penalties to change behaviour. a rule or order issued by an executive authority or regulatory agency and having the force of law.’

Necessary? Yes. Rules can keep us safe and give us direction. But is this what you want to be always striving for? Now I know your Good Girl freaking loves to follow a rule and lap up the validation for doing so, but does your soul want to be contained within the usual way of doing things? Who is this executive authority lording it over you? Is it you?

You’ve mastered ‘regulation’, you get an A+!!

And you’re still stuck. There’s still something missing.

Anxiety is treated as a mental health issue, and it isn’t one. It *manifests* in the mind with racing thoughts, decision paralysis, catastrophising, and over-analysing but it *originates* in the body.

The mind does what it does in anxiety because it’s trying to make sense of what’s unfelt in the body.

Which means that addressing our physiology is fundamental in healing it — physiology affects thoughts. It’s a bottom up approach to healing. And so working with the breath absolutely does have many benefits.

BUT focusing purely on mechanics like breathing ‘optimally’ to heal anxiety has its limitations because it misses the key aspect of healing: WHY you’re not breathing optimally in the first place, AKA the RELATIONSHIP between all aspects of the bodymind, psychological, phyiological, emotional, and spiritual.

Just as nervous system regulation is addressing a symptom not the root, so is functional breathing. It’s why people find it so difficult to adapt to and maintain practices and why I rarely give my clients a daily practice, because what caused the breathing to ‘maladapt’ in the first place is still charged in the body. You’re just fighting your own protection rather than integrating the part of you who needed protecting.

I haven’t always practiced and taught/guided this so consciously, because when I was first practicing breathwork and somatics for myself and when I was first training (and before being specifically trained in trauma) none of this was particularly emphasised through the framework of the modalities.

This doesn’t mean that all release is catharsis and that expression can’t be a part of healing (my gosh how I feel at odds with that word ‘healing’ these days — remembering? Integrating? Re-whole-ing?! Getting to know?). It’s the energy it’s done with, where it’s coming from (deep within you or pushing from outside for example), how present you remain with your body and with presence, how you create meaning from the experience, and how you feel in the expression.

It doesn’t mean intense experiences don’t happen, but they don’t have to happen for the necessary ’healing’ to occur.

Next up: what does ‘safety’ really mean and what is it to be ‘safe’ in a space or practice? Because I think we’ve lost our way with this one as well.

Because as long as you stop at ‘regulation’ you’re not getting to the truth that your anxiety is there because:

✔️your grandad was a prisoner of war in N*zi Germany
✔️your anxiety/it’s symptoms are unconsciously meeting a need that you never had met as a child
✔️it’s trying to break you free from the self protective, but now unnecessary, masks you’ve been wearing your entire life
✔️you’re showing up in your adult life as the child who didn’t get her needs met
✔️ and our culture has zero connection with God

And as necessary and useful as regulation tools are for helping you to manage, get on with daily life, and keep your head above water…

Doing 4-7-8 breathing, butterfly hugs, and centring will never going to take you to that depth, integrate the truth of it, or experience the growth of self on the other side.
Because it IS that deep.

Anxiety has meaning and it matters.

You have to be able to regulate yourself to create a baseline from which to do this work, it’s a foundational somatic skill.

But regulation is not the work itself. There’s more to you and to it than that.

Because as long as you stop at ‘regulation’ you’re not getting to the truth that your anxiety is there because:

✔️your grandad was a prisoner of war in N*zi Germany
✔️your anxiety/it’s symptoms are unconsciously meeting a need that you never had met as a child
✔️it’s trying to break you free from the self protective, but now unnecessary, masks you’ve been wearing your entire life
✔️you’re showing up in your adult life as the child who didn’t get her needs met
✔️ and our culture has zero connection with God

And as necessary and useful as regulation tools are for helping you to manage, get on with daily life, and keep your head above water…

Doing 4-7-8 breathing, butterfly hugs, and centring will never going to take you to that depth, integrate the truth of it, or experience the growth of self on the other side.
Because it IS that deep.

Anxiety has meaning and it matters.

You have to be able to regulate yourself to create a baseline from which to do this work, it’s a foundational somatic skill.

But regulation is not the work itself. There’s more to you and to it than that.

I never managed my anxiety

And it healed anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was lucky that in the period I had (what I can now see was) high functioning anxiety from around 2006-2014, we didn’t have social media to self identify and diagnose in the way we do now — I don’t think I even knew what anxiety was, I didn’t know that the suffocating frustration of being always in my own way, being stuck in the nagging, incessant looping of my own mind, the stifling overwhelm, and being constantly on alert waiting for the other shoe to drop was ‘anxiety’, so I didn’t have a label for it, didn’t seek healing for it, and therefore never identified with it.

So it didn’t heal through management and regulation because I didn’t know what those things were (although for sure, it might have been helpful in specific present moments to have a toolkit to support me).

It healed because I went underneath it to the root.

On my quest to heal chronic pain, I inadvertently ended up unearthing the root of anxiety, getting to know it, expressing its energy, and integrating it into something bigger. It was profoundly UNregulated, messy, and non linear. And it definitely could never have been met, understood, or alchemised with a ‘toolkit’.

And now — aside from the natural anxiety we all have by virtue of the fact that we’re thinking and feeling aware and conscious humans, inexplicably existing on a gigantic planet spinning through infinite space, and we’re going to die and don’t know when — I have zero anxiety.

I retrofitted the process I went through to transmute my anxiety and have since taken dozens of 1-1 clients through it, and now I’m taking you through the entire process (with non of the faffing about and cul de sacs I wandered into on my own journey) in my upcoming self paced mini course. You already know how to regulate. You’ve got a whole ass toolbox. I know because people tell me this every single day.

And they also tell me that despite this… nothing’s shifting.

Because regulation tools aren’t designed to shift anything!

They’re there to help you keep your head above water. To bring you to baseline. But the true shifts that you pay a coach to support you through happen when you take the arm bands off, slide off the flamingo inflatable, and let go of the edge of the pool.

And this depth is what gets missed when we become over-reliant on tools.

We think because they make us feel better, then we’re ’healing’. But healing isn’t about feeling better. It’s about feeling what never got felt – ie. the uncomfortable, scary things.

If you grab a tool every time one of those feelings arises, they stay unexpressed. And so YOU stay unexpressed. And therefore, anxious and stuck and overwhelmed.

Sometimes, you need to tap, do a breathing technique, or journal to ground yourself in the moment.

But if you’re always trying to contain it, you’ll interrupt the very thing that’s trying to complete.

This is why I don’t coach through a toolbox (and listen, I’m not saying I NEVER give tools and that I don’t teach clients how to regulate, of course I do when it’s appropriate. Don’t be thinking I don’t know the nuance).

Because it keeps us on the surface. You can get tools anywhere. You don’t need to pay a coach for that. You come to this work because something deeper is stirring.

You don’t need more tools.

You need the un-tooled space to finally feel what your body never got to finish.

To meet your sensations without controlling them. To stay with what arises instead of jumping to fix or silence it. To feel what is TRUE rather than always striving to feel better.

No, ‘regulation’ doesn’t mean ‘calm’ but I’m finding that that is still what sooo many people are using nervous system regulation tools for and are seeking when they come to somatics: to calm themselves down because they don’t have the capacity to hold themselves when they’re NOT calm.

Regulation doesn’t mean calm, but it’s also not the same thing as capacity.

Slight side note: I saw somebody say that ‘regulation’ is a synonym for ‘masculine’ and, yeah, I think that’s on the mark.

To be regulated is to, effectively, be in your comfort zone or ‘tolerance’. It’s an important baseline and it’s fundamental for homeostasis. CAPACITY is expanding what is comfortable, increasing what you’re able to tolerate, making room for the bigger, more chaotic, and less reasonable. It’s when we move from homeostasis to growth.

When you expand your capacity instead of (or as well as) always returning to baseline, you increase your tolerance for YOU!

You stop being at war with yourself because you can allow yourself and hold yourself in all of your states, especially the ones you’ve been taught are wrong, the ones that need pathogising and fixing, and the ones you think need to be calmed down, contained, and micromanaged; read: ‘regulated’.

Then you stop being your own enemy and can just…. Be.

When you’re not behaving how you think you should be — read: when you’re anxious, emotional, and have chronic symptoms popping up all over the place (read: when you’re not neat, good, presentable, and forever reliable) in comes the inner punisher and here you are again treating yourself like a naughty child who needs time out on the step. Because that’s how you grew up, being punished for not behaving how somebody else thought you should.

So, it makes sense that you’re anxious if you’re living 24/7 with someone in your own head constantly picking you apart and giving you consequences for having an expression.

And the twist is, that if this is your pattern it’s very likely that all of the nervous system regulation is just another way for your punisher to play out, keeping you contained, predictable, and not erratic enough to disrupt anyone’s peace. You’ve mastered regulation, now it’s time to increase your capacity for *yourself*

So if you’ve done allllll of the self micromanaging through regulation practices, withholding, and trying to punish your way out of anxiety, overwhelm, chronic pain, it might be time to try a different way.

This is not to say you can’t rest and relax until you’ve completed ‘the work’, but there will be a cycle that needs to complete, even just a small one: processing one emotion. Finishing one creative project. Or going for a short power walk after work.

Trying to skip steps and force rest without following the cycle is actually extractive and creates even more displacement of energy.

This is how I healed chronic fatigue syndrome. Not by resting more!

I COULDN’T rest because there was too much unexpressed energy that had to be resolved and given direction first.

I know you’ve been told to regulate your nervous system and add a cold shower and 10 mins of box breathing and 50 chants to Ganesh to your morning routine and then everything will be perfect…

But you’ve been DOING that every morning for how long now? And the knot is still there. You still feel like you’re missing something… And you spin out the second you have to make a decision…

Nervous system regulation tools and spiritual practices are great (for real, I do all of these things too) but they’re not getting to the root of why you have a constant knot in your chest, an autoimmune condition, and why you can’t post your face on social media without a downward spiral of overthinking and shame.

Being able to regulate your nervous system is important, and it’s the foundation we do somatic work on, but it’s not the ultimate goal.

Because what if I told you that at this point, it’s being OVER regulated that’s keeping you stuck looping in overwhelm, feeling like you need a lobotomy, unable to escape the perpetual bloody chaos, and is the reason that knot in your chest is still there… even after your daily oracle card pulling, journalling, and box breathing?

What will actually get to the root of it is asking the question that gets missed when we believe that ‘nervous system dysreulation’ is the reason for all of our problems:

WHY am I dysregulated in the first place?
